New! The Changing Room

The Changing Room is the first text-only publication from our fundraising partners at Barefoot Man.

Background

Barefoot Man is a not-for-profit campaign that was set up to promote inclusion and healthier masculinity through art.

The project began launched sixteen years ago as the Warwick Rowers calendar.  Celebrated around the world for its artistic nude images of young sportsmen at an English university, the calendar has became a platform where men confront their privilege by getting naked as allies of inclusion, equity in life chances, and better male mental health.

Their pioneering work turned into a pathway that has now empowered hundreds of men to step in front of the camera as a way of exploring their identities and values as men. What began as a student calendar has evolved into Barefoot Man, a space where everyone (of every gender and sexuality) can explore their relationship with masculinity through art and conversation.

Barefoot Man continues to fund Sport Allies through photography, film and art that reflect a diverse range of perspectives from participants on both sides of the camera.

ABOUT THIS BOOK

The Changing Room features forty-seven poems that trace moments of despair, epiphany and ultimate redemption. Together these poems offer a poignant, often funny and sometimes painfully raw perspective on the fundraising project that led to the creation of this charity.

Screenwriter Angus Malcolm had been suffering from writer’s block for several years when he decided to step away from his keyboard and pick up a camera for the first time. Finding an unexpected new freedom of expression in photography, Angus shot the first Warwick Rowers calendar just one year later. As the artistic director of the project ever since, these poems reflect his belief in the unique healing space that the project has created - for himself and many others.

The poems in The Changing Room are a celebration of the author’s journey towards reconciling his past with his present to make better choices for his future - a journey that many men need to confront more consciously.

All proceeds from sales of this book will go Barefoot Sport Allies.
